In part written to refute the claim by the Chief of the US Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soil, Milton Whitney, who claimed that all soils are inexhaustible of the minerals needed to grow crops. In the run-up to the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s, this book along with the works of F.H. King were not heeded in a way that would have prevented disaster. A primer in soil science of the day.
