Two weeks before his death at the age of eighty-two Weaver submitted to the University of Nebraska Press the manuscript of a book which was to be, he said, the final statement drawn from a lifetime of ecological research. The present book is that statement. The purposes of his investigations: “to clarify some of the many problems presented by this vast natural unit of vegetation, to better understand the importance and significance of grassland and its utilization, and to furnish a permanent record of a rapidly vanishing vegetation.”
