In the late 19th century Parisian market gardeners developed novel procedures to produce out of season vegetables under glass and very high productivity outdoors using raised beds and abundant horse manure compost. These methods inspired the raised bed intensive system promulgated by John Jeavons, author of How To Grow More Vegetables, first published in the mid-1970s and still in print. Jeavons’ early writings referred to this book and it should be read by anyone using similar intensive methods.
